On the news today, there
was a report about the UPDF breaking up a gay rights meeting. The people
attending the meeting were arrested, but later released without charges. “I
can’t stand gay people,” my host commented. I was flabbergasted. “You know gay
people don’t choose to be gay right?” “Of course they do,” my other host replied.
“No, they don’t. For a gay person to ‘choose’ to be in a heterosexual
relationship is as unnatural as for a straight person to ‘choose’ to be in a
homosexual relationship. Do you think you can choose to be in a relationship
with another woman?” Silence ensued.
The news channel held a
poll – Do you think the police should have broken up the gay rights meetings.
Results – 81% yes, 19% no. Honestly, I was surprised by the 19% that said no.
That was way more than I had expected in this country. “I bet that 19% consists
of all the expats and gay people in this country.” Laughter ensued. And no one
made any more mention of this sticky issue.
